auuuucklaaaaaands hotteeeessst muuuusiiiiic...

As I was doing the promo rounds for Moonlight today, I heard an interesting story at Mai FM.

When asked what my favourite part of making the song was, I said something to the effect of 'when I got to sing some Roger Troutmans'. The production manager Dave Bridgman proceeded to tell me that all the talk-box stings on Mai are actually the one and only Roger Troutman. I was skeptical to say the least, and thought this was another 'Bizzy Bone is my cousin from Gisborne' urban legend.

His story was detailed though. He basically said that in 97' when they couldn't get the talk-box sound they wanted for their ad's, they tried totally in vain to connect with Troutman through Universal. He never heard back until the day they called him to say they had the drops, and it wasn't gonna cost them anything.

But, talking to the one Turk-Stunna of Late Night Hype, he reckons its most definitely former Mai presenter Mike Haru. Im lost, don't know who to believe. Is this common knowledge in Auckland music and radio circles? Or have I had my leg acutely pulled? If you know the true story, let a brotha know. In the meantime...

I swear it's Mike Haru. It sounds exactly the same as the stings for Late Nite Hype, and they're done by Mike Haru.

turksta, a talk box (or vocoder) sounds absolutely nothing like anybodies speaking voice, let alone Mike Haru's.
Your evidence is insufficient and unadmissible my friend

To clear this up once & for all..Its DEFINITELY Roger Troutman on the MAIFM jingles..The contact was organised by Phil Howling (now at Warners)I composed & played all the backing tracks at MAI's FunkFactory studios in ponsonby & sent them on DAT to Roger..He did the talkbox parts over my backing trax at his own studio,Troutman Sound Labs in Dayton,Ohio & his engineer mixed it up & posted it back on DAT..
The main ones we still use of Rogers are "Bringin' you the Beat","Slow Jammin MAI","Feel the Vibe on MAI",& "Aucklands Hottest Music MAI"..thats the TRUTH!! dave@maifm

It was most certainly Roger Troutman, I remember Dave telling me the same story when I was still wiping my nose as a young'n. Dave was amazing sitting in his little studio with all of his instruments always pulling out something kool.
It's defenitely not Mike, i know this because I was always stuck to him like glue during the golden years of MaiFM, brothers and all.
Haha those were good drops though! Ill always think of Ross Goodwins voice as the voice behind the promos though and they were played for sooooo long!!
